Nodier studies have scarcely examined the relationship between Nodier and Sade, the first one having apparently done everything to lessen his interest in the sulphurous work of the marquis. However, little is known, Nodier is the inventor, or the propagator of the word “sadism” in the French language, which appeared for the first time in 1834, in the 8th edition of the "Dictionnaire Universel" by Boiste, that, precisely, revised, amended and largely amplified by Nodier.
